13 in 13

At the start of last year I made a commitment to knit from stash as much as possible.  To complete 13 knits from stash in 2013.  I am happy to report that I did in fact finish 13 knits, in fact I finished 16!

My yarn stash was not huge to start with, but I did have a couple of jumper lots which helped immensely when planning outfits.  My yarn purchases this year were also modest, but they are already fitting into my knitting plans for 2014!  As my life will include a train commute four days a week for the next couple of years I'd like to take advantage of that prime knitting time and get stuck into some big projects.  So I'm looking at 14 in 14!

Have a safe and happy new year my friends.  Thank you for your company on my journey in making stuff this year, I look forward to sharing more plans and adventures with you through 2014!

Outfit Five: June

Yay June!  Or more accurately, brrrr June!  I am a creature of winter.  I love layering up in warm woolly knits and June was meant to have a warm woolly cabley jumper, but upon revision, that project has been shuffled back to July to make room for comfy, toasty, slouchy sweats.

The pieces in this outfit have been getting an awful lot of wear already as they fill a couple of gaps in my wardrobe.  My Red Riding Hoodie was made much earlier in the year and has been waiting for its outfit to join it.  I finished the track pants a few weeks ago and they have become a fast wardrobe staple.

The hoodie is the first project in the Sewing With Knits Craftsy course I got for my birthday.  I modified the pattern to be less flares at the hemline and added bands at the hem and cuffs.  The red fleece fabric I used was an op shop score and is such a great bright colour, I love it.  Of course, as it is a red riding hoodie I made a little sleeping wolf appliqué from a sweet free embroidery pattern from Wild Olive.

Quite possibly my favourite part of this outfit is my hat.  A cabled bonnet with long cords, tassels and a giant pom pom.  It's very warm, and a little bit silly which makes me happy.

The pattern is great freebie, Neon Ski Bonnet by Lacey Volk.  The pattern has four sizes from small child to large adult.  I knitted the large adult and it fits exactly how I wanted it.  The yarn I used for this one is aran weight undyed cormo and is like butter, it used less than I was expecting so I still have a skein and a half of this lovely smooshy stuff to play with.

I'm amazed that I haven't made any jersey infinity scarves before this one.  They would have to be one of the quickest projects to whip up, they look great and are so versatile!  This fabric was intended for a kids tee but it really wanted to be mine so I kept it for myself.  A half metre of fabric sewn into a long tube,  given a little twist and joined at the ends.  Instant warm!

We live in a hilly little town that gets super frosty in winter.  Warm hands are essential for the icy morning school run.  10ply alpaca mitts are perfect.  Another free pattern, Staghorn Mitts, these knit up very quickly.  I used smaller needles for the ribbing and added another repeat of the cable to extend them over my fingers.  The ribbing folds back for more finger freedom when required.

Underneath all those top layers is a basic long sleeved tee.  Another from the Sewing With Knits class. This one is in a cream ribbed knit fabric.  But that top's not cream, I hear you say.  After my tie dying tights experiment, I feel the need to dye everything!  I tie dyed the top, untied it and dropped it back in the dye bath for a bit of an over-dye.  The result came out a bit like storm clouds in the soft grey.

On the bottom are my trusty new track pants.  I used the same pattern as for my pyjama pants, only this time with pockets and zipped ribbing cuffs.

Every part of these pants was thrifted.  The fabric, elastic and zippers all cam from my local op shop.  I had enough of the black fleece to make a hoody dress as well and I still have heaps left over! I tried to incorporate all the details I like in RTW trackies into my pants.  The pockets are deep enough for my phone to not fall out, the side seams are top stitched and they're exactly the right length.

This outfit was so stress free, it seemed to grow organically from the pre-sewn hoodie and my surprising lack of track pants.  The knits are also numbers 11 and 12 of my 13 knits from stash in 2013. I'm still knitting away on my Beatnik for July and the time had come to decide on a pattern for my July jeans!

Outfit Three: April

Now that the weather is cooling down my outfits are getting a bit more substantial.  April is four pieces, five if you count the bracelet I made by deconstructing necklace.  The main feature is the blazer.  I fell in love with this cotton drill critter fabric and bought a couple of metres of it with  plans to make a dress for Joss and maybe a bag for me.  The more I looked at it though the more I wanted to keep it for myself.  Now it's all mine!

A simple blazer with a shawl collar, cropped sleeves and a single button.  I'm really pleased with my top stitching on this one.  I have a tendency to rush it and get all wonky, but I'm finally taking my time and getting good results.

This is the first time I've made a blazer so the whole thing was a learning experience.  I lined it with some light grey poly cotton I scored from the op shop.

Another first: double welt pockets.  I'm not 100% satisfied with them, but for a first effort they're alright.  One of the best things about doing 12 outfits is that I'm using techniques that I haven't tried before.

Blazer Pattern: Burda magazine 9/2008 pattern 129.

I have mixed feelings about the trousers.  They're comfortable, and the fit is ok, but the linen in there means they crease like crazy and get a bit baggy with wear.  They spring right back into shape with a wash but as you can see from the pics, after a day's wear they're not sitting very well.  More learning!

Trousers pattern: Burda magazine 1/2009 pattern 121

I got the wool blend jersey for April's top from the spotlight bargain table for $3 a metre.  It is lightweight, soft and super drapey.  I had planned to make a different top with it but that style didn't sit right under the blazer so I had to find another pattern.  This one is another Burda mag pattern, 3/2010, 118B.  The deep cowl neckline and drawstring waist make it a bit fancier than a plain tee and it dresses up and down really well.

Finally, the silk scarf.  It took forever to knit and I was so pleased to be done with it, but it was worth every minute and every hand cramp.  It is gorgeous and soft and drapey and light and warm.  I only ended up using half the 100g skein of yarn even though I did a full 13 pattern repeats.  This is also number 5 of my 13 in 13 from stash.

Pattern: Groovy in laceweight
Yarn: Sulky Silk from Mayhem & Chaos in Bad Things
Needles: 2.5mm

I tried to make every part of this outfit as versatile and wearable as possible.  With Me Made May just around the corner we'll see just how successful that was!

Just Keep Knitting

From recent posts it looks like all I've been doing lately is sewing.  There is a knit for April's outfit and I have been working on it.  And working and working and working on it.  It gets carted around everywhere with me and picked up whenever I have free hands, it's been to cafes,

sporting events,

beach holidays,

school pick up,

and any car trip when I'm not driving.  It is also perfect TV knitting so it has spent a bit of time with the Doctor.

Right now though I've had to take a break for a couple of days to rest my hands.  Groovy in laceweight silk, and while it is beautiful to work with, the endless stockinette in skinny yarn on skinny needles has resulted in cramped sore hands.  Now its time to pick it back up and just keep knitting!  I really can't wait to move on to something thick and cabley.

Waves of Gold

I still have a couple of things to photograph before I'll be up to date in documenting my projects for the year so far.  This one I finished in just two days.  A combination of stunning yarn and a beautiful simple pattern made it difficult to put down and I am very much in love with the end result.

It's no secret that I love Mayhem and Chaos yarns, the colours are so vibrant and gorgeous, and this skein of Lollisox yarn in Rumplestiltskin was especially lovely.  I needed the perfect pattern to show it off.  Song of the Sea was that pattern.

Pattern: Song of the Sea
Yarn: Mayhem and Chaos Lollisox - Rumplestiltskin
Size: Long

This was actually the fifth knit from stash this year (a couple of little projects still to be photographed), so I'm well on my way to 13 in 13.

Almost Effortless

Decisions about sleeve lengths should not be made in bars or restaurants.  For example, if you are knitting a thick warm cardigan for winter and you take that cardigan to a knit night in summer, don't have a couple of ciders and try it on.  I decided that I was jack of knitting sleeves and that elbow length looked and felt good so I started the ribbing.  The next morning at Coen's little athletics meet it was incredibly cold.  So right then and there I ripped the ribbing and continued on with my sleeve.

I started this one at the end of January and only took a couple of weeks to finish, 10ply on 5.5mm needles flies.  I love the long front panels, they drape nicely and wrap snugly.  The waist shaping makes it sit nicely in the back.  Another project to add to my 13 in 13 from stash.

Pattern: Effortless
Yarn: Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 10ply - Ghost
Size: 34.5" bust
More photos here.

In an effort to get some nice photos of my cardigan I took myself and my tripod up to the historical monument near our house.  I couldn't resist a backlit sun flare.

Snowflake

*tap tap* is this thing on?

So... since my last post I made a human.  Her name is Jocelyn.  She is wearing my first knit of the year, Snowflake from Tin Can Knits.

This is the first of 13 in 13 I'm planning to knit from stash.

Pattern: Snowflake
Size: 1-2
Yarn: Cleckheaton Country 8ply
I cast on on new years day and finished quickly, this feels like a productive year.  Snowflake is a beautiful pattern with a massive range of sizes, quick but still interesting and the finished product is lovely.  I'm looking forward to knitting one for myself.  Don't worry, I wont make them matchy, I'm not really into the Mummy & Me style.  More info here.

It's good to be back.
